Small holder farmers lose 50% of their total Harvests due to post harvest losses
According to FAO, approximately one third of all food produced globally is lost each year. The environmental impacts are immense, with 1.4 billion hectares of land—almost 30% of the planet’s agricultural land area—producing food that is never eaten.
Perishable food especially fresh fruits and vegetables start to deteriorate as soon as they are harvested because they are cut off from their source of water and nutrition. They lose weight, texture, flavor, nutritional value and appeal. Cooling significantly slows down the rate of deterioration, thereby increasing the storage life of the produce.
Lacking electricity or sufficient cold storage units, small-scale farmers incur post-harvest losses of 50% because they can’t afford modern storage facilities and resort to using polythene bags which easily contaminate their produce resulting into food wastage.
Food spoilage creates significant economic losses for small-scale farmers. As unrefrigerated fresh produce, such as tomatoes, avocadoes, and mangoes, starts to spoil in the heat, intermediary produce brokers exploit farmers’ urgent need to sell, often offering subpar prices for crops.
The Present-day postharvest loss is a threat to food security, economic stability as well as environmental protection that cuts across most farming communities in Africa and around the globe.
At Munakyalo Agro-Innovations, we provide solar-powered innovations to reduce post harvest losses among small holder farming communities.
1) Our Cold storage stations (cold hives) provide a transformative solution to combat food wastage. These extend the shelf life of perishable produce from the usual 2 days to 3 weeks reducing 80% of food losses.
2) We construct solar driers for the small holder farmers to reduce food spoilage and to promote value addition
3) We aggregate fresh produce directly from the farmers at a market price hence increasing farmer incomes and livelihoods.
We offer a “pay-as-you-store” subscription model where farmers pay a flat fee of $0.4 USD per crate stored per day and each cold station is installed in the small holder farmer community to increase accessibility by the rural poor. We also include an off-take mechanism, enabling direct purchase of farmers’ produce at competitive rates, and eliminating middlemen.
The Munakyalo Farmer App (MFA) is a digital platform that digitalizes the agricultural value chain to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers who face several challenges in order to sustain their livelihood, with the Munakyalo Farmer App (MFA), small holder farmers are able to:
- Build credibility by creating a digital transaction history, which provides the opportunity to access credit services.
- Receive digital payments and reduce the risks of moving with cash.
- Report the quantities available at their farmers for direct purchase.
- Reduces the time and cost of travel to transact.
